What is the Functional Independence Measure?


The Functional Independence Measure (FIM) is an assessment tool used by healthcare providers to evaluate an individual’s level of disability and their need for assistance with daily activities.

It helps to understand how much help someone might need and is widely used in rehabilitation settings, nursing homes, and long-term care facilities. It assesses 18 different activities, divided into two main categories: Motor & Cognitive.

Motor Activities


Self-care

Eating, grooming, bathing, dressing (upper and lower body), and toileting.

Sphincter control

Bladder and bowel management.

Transfers

Moving from a bed to a chair, toilet, or shower.

Locomotion

Walking or using a wheelchair, and going up and down stairs.

Cognitive Activities


Communication

Understanding and expressing information, including speaking and comprehending.
